FIBERGLASS POOLS DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
M.E. Contracting’s success is in large part a result of our insistence on excellent communication and transparency with the client. When we work on any pool design and construction project we employ a simple yet effective step-by-step process to ensure the client & M.E. Contracting team are on the same page
Our process can be broken down into the following steps:
Consultation
Design
Estimate
Permits
Construction
Consultation
Each and every prospective client will first have a “discovery” conversation with the project manager to discuss the general aspects of the project.
Once we understand the project’s general outline we will schedule an on-premise consultation.
At the time of consultation the project manager will meet with the homeowners, and learn about the client’s “ideal project”, their “must-have”, their ideas, needs, and the budget they have.
We will take notes, pictures, and measurements. We will exchange ideas and then use the information collected to create an estimate to match the family’s lifestyle, needs, and budget.
Design
M.E. Contracting’s project manager will use the notes, measurements, and pictures he took at the initial consultation to create a preliminary design.
The design will take into consideration all aspects: structures, grading, existing trees, client’s needs, budget, etc.
Once the initial design is complete, the client will be presented with the layout where they are encouraged to provide feedback so a final revision can be prepared for quoting.
Estimate
Once the initial “rough” design has been agreed upon we will again meet with the client to discuss the various elements that go into the project such as materials, color options, etc. We will develop the estimate accordingly and schedule a meeting to present and discuss the estimate with the client.
Permits
Once the final estimate is approved we will start working on the permit.
Each city or municipality has its own requirements, bylaws etc., therefore, time to receive the permit can vary greatly.
Construction
Once ready to go, M.E. Contracting will schedule the construction of the project, and prepare the crews, machinery, materials etc.
We will have a foreman, a project manager, and the landscaping designer all working together to stay true to the design, timeline, and budget
POOL DESIGN PROJECTS
There are many things that make fiberglass pools unique. Unlike concrete pools which need to be built or constructed on location, Fiberglass pools are single-unit “shells”, constructed in factories and then installed on the property. Due to the way it is constructed, fiberglass provides added flexibility, which means that these pools are especially crack-resistant. The single-shell Fiberglass units are specially treated with a gel coating that keeps the surfaces smooth and algae-resistant.

What are the "pros and cons" of fiberglass pools compared to other types?
There are many “pros” to fiberglass pools:
- Fiberglass pools have a slightly higher upfront cost than vinyl but are still less expensive than concrete installation.
- Fiberglass pools often come with unique built-in features, such as stairs and seats.
- The fiberglass pool surface is flexible and crack-resistant and is less prone to algae growth.
- Fiberglass pools have a lower maintenance cost and, if properly installed and maintained, can last over 30 years.
These are the “cons”:
- Since Fiberglass pools are made as shells and then installed, they come in a limited number of pre-designed shapes and sizes, which means that they are less customizable than other types of pools.
- While Fiberglass pools require less chemical treatment, the PH balance of the water is more delicate than other pool types.
How long do Fiberglass pools last?
Fiberglass pools can easily last for over 30 years! Beyond this, they are also durable, resistant to damage, flexible and crack-proof and are one of the lowest maintenance pool options on the market. These unique advantages come from the design and building techniques of fiberglass.

What is the cost of maintaining fiberglass pools?
Fiberglass pools have some of the lowest long-term maintenance costs. Fiberglass doesn’t require the brushing, skimming, and chemical treatments common with other pool types. They are also less porous, which means they are less likely to accumulate algae. This is primarily because of the gel coating that covers the fiberglass finish.
Fiberglass pools do require gel coating replacements, approximately every fifteen years. This makes Fiberglass cost-effective long-term options requiring significantly less maintenance than some other options.
Do fiberglass pools crack?
Fiberglass pools rarely crack!
This is because the fiberglass pool is manufactured as one single-piece shell and coated with a gel coating.
The construction process of the fiberglass shell creates a thinner and more flexible pool, that is resistant to cracking.
